God is doing some exciting things in my heart and mind to start this year off.
This morning I’m reminded that while it’s great to serve and love others, the REASON that we serve and love should always be God and God first. Loving, serving and honoring God first, and above all else, produces a natural overflow the those around us benefit from. The overflow of our worship and love to God is loving, caring and serving others.
Motive matters (1st Sam 16:7). When our motive becomes people and things first above the Lord, then we have put someone or something in God’s place (an idol). God will honor a failed attempt or effort, but He cannot honor a heart with the wrong motive.
If I’m going to touch hearts, win souls for the Kingdom and better the lives of those around me, then God has to be my first WHY. If I do these things only because of the gratitude it brings me, then I am serving myself. Things change and people change, but my motive holds strong. When life comes around, I need a WHY that’s bigger than just what brings me gratitude.
