Everyone is ‘in’ their business. But you also have to work ‘on’ your business. Awareness is key. You have to look ‘up.’ — Dan Gilbert
How do you grow an empire? A legacy? A business, organization, or culture that thrives with continual growth? Every path to success is laden with distractions. But it’s our perspective that helps us to stay the course. It seems paradoxical that we can lose perspective within the very things that help us reach towards a goal.
While we can’t anticipate every possible scenario, we can purposefully choose to be aware. A perspective that seeks to be aware will always be open to the possibilities that many overlook. History is ridden with businesses and organizations that failed to adapt, innovate, and grow; not always necessarily in size, but in skill, experience, reputation, and culture.
Doing it ‘this way because that’s the way we’ve always done it’ is a track to utter failure. Just because that’s the way we’ve always done, can it be better? What’s changed since then? What things can we be better at that we haven’t given a lot of attention to?
It’s not enough to just work “in” our businesses and organizations, going through the motions of doing what we do. But what are we intentionally doing to cultivate our culture? What opportunities are there to reimagine what we do through the lens of who we are? How do we embody what we want to become? An organization’s infrastructure will always be significant, but its culture will always win.
